Overview

I am in my final year of study for a computer science degree at the University of Waterloo. I am an energetic team player with strong creative problem solving skills.

I am always striving to learn. Learning a new technology to solve a new problem is fun. Even this simple resume is an example. I decided to build it in valid XHTML 1.1 and CSS to exercise the knowledge I gained in my previous work term.

One of my biggest sources of information is the Blogosphere. I read hundreds of blogs per day, and am finding more and more value in developing, and posting to my own blog, Echo Generation. I find that this research keeps me up to date with technological innovations across the globe.

Technical Skills

Software Development

  • Maintenance and enhancement of an economic risk management application entitled Economic Value Program while at Credit Union Central of Ontario. The Economic Value Program is a server-based web application which utilizes multiple technologies, primarily Java and ASP.
  • Custom application development experience in Visual Basic gained while performing contract programming work for Dortman Bros. Barn Equipment.
  • Finalist in the 2001 ECOO Provincial Programming Contest (Ontario).

On the Web

  • Implemented improvements and bug fixes on the corporate intranet and public-facing Online Banking system at HEPCOE Credit Union. I was exposed to a range of technologies including EJB, JSP, ASP, XHTML, and CSS. Also, I was able to gain more experience in different stages in the software development life cycle, from tracking down bugs to developing web interfaces.
  • Built my own blog, Echo Generation, which allows me to play with some XHTML, CSS, PHP and SQL. It also serves as a type of long-term memory, and a place where I can help share knowledge.
  • This resume was coded in XHTML 1.1. Check the source, validate if you so choose.

Security

  • Discovered security vulnerabilities associated with the wireless LAN (802.11b) in use at Human Resources Development Canada. Resolved the problem using a combination of Cisco LEAP technology and a back-end RADIUS server. Produced a detailed implementation plan to fix the vulnerability, which was distributed to all HRDC locations in Ontario which have wireless networks.
  • Discovered a number of buffer overrun and format string vulnerabilities in internally developed software while employed by Open Text Corporation. Worked with the software development team to develop and test fixes to each of the problem areas.
  • Resolved a variety of web related vulnerabilities while working at Credit Union Central of Ontario. The most common issues were SQL injection, cross site scripting, and inappropriately configured software.

Professional Skills

Communications

  • Facilitated a variety of short term money market and foreign exchange transactions over the phone with client credit unions while working at Credit Union Central of Ontario. This position required clear verbal communication skills and a solid understanding of various financial products.
  • Actively participated in the creation of the monthly FirstClass newsletter while working at Open Text Corporation. Typical writing assignments were moderately technical and targeted towards a highly knowledgeable audience.
  • Provided internal technical support services while working at Human Resources Development Canada. This position required a substantial amount of inter-personal communication to diagnose and resolve complex software configuration problems.

Innovation

  • Transitioned the Online Banking system at HEPCOE Credit Union from outputing HTML to valid XHTML 1.0 Transitional. The project included more than 50k lines of Java/JSP/HTML code and my extensive research into possible complications and their accompanying solutions allowed for a quicker and smoother transition than planned.
  • Designed a documentation system for Meikle Automation utilizing XML and XSL transformations to ensure data re-usability, consistent formatting, and employee efficiency. The time required to create and publish custom user manuals reduced by an average of 80% when compared to the previous documentation system.
  • Improved administrative productivity by 40% by creating a custom Visual Basic application to replace the legacy time sheet and payroll system in use at Dortman Bros. Barn Equipment.

Entrepreneurial

  • During high school I successfully founded and operated a small outdoor paintball field. Over a period of three years I grew the small field into a sizable part-time business with yearly revenue of around $15000. Duties included managing two part-time employees, organizing groups of players, ordering and picking up supplies, dealing with customers, handling money, maintaining financial books, repairing malfunctioning equipment, and maintaining an adaptable field layout tailored to the needs of the business' target market.
  • Member of the executive committee of the Entrepreneurs Association of the University of Waterloo for the previous two terms.
  • London Small Business Center - MyCompany young entrepreneurs training program graduate. (Aug2003)
  • University of Waterloo - Enterprise Boot Camp graduate. (Apr2003)
